A benchmark published on Thursday went looking for something quieter than prompt injection: agents that simply fetch more private data than the request actually called for. Eight privacy-sensitive domains, deterministic scoring with no judge in the loop, seven models across four families, and every one of them reached past the authorised scope. The strongest predictor of how badly was not the model but the wording: the vaguer the ask, the wider the grab. Temperature barely moved it, and a bigger tool pool made things worse only sublinearly, which points at something structural rather than random. The authors put it down to cost asymmetry, and that is hard to argue with – an unnecessary call costs the agent nothing, a missing field costs it the task. Forcing each call to carry a written justification, and dropping the ones that cannot, cut the privacy-related excess by 43 per cent. Which leaves the question of who defines necessary, and where that is written down.
